The Department of Zoology, under Siksha-Bhavana (Institute of Science) is regarded as a glorious centre of academic excellence. Initially starting with B.Sc. Honours in Zoology in 1965, the Department introduced M.Sc. course in 1968. At present, the courses being offered include B.Sc. Honours in Zoology, M.Sc. in Zoology and Ph.D. in Zoology with the aim of acquainting students with advancements of Modern Biology integrating knowledge and methods from different disciplines. The Department has well developed infrastructure and sophisticated equipment facility for undertaking in-depth research in the fields of cancer biology, host-parasite interactions, ecological modeling, diabetes and metabolism, fish biology and molecular endocrinology. The Department was recognized by UGC for special assistance under SAP in 1994 and thereafter received UGC-COSIST and DST-FIST (Levels I and II) grants. The Department has been UGCrecognized Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) for two successive periods (2007-12 and 2012-17). Our constant endeavor has been to develop the Department into a Centre of Excellence with all modern facilities for teaching and research, to attract best students and researchers and to provide quality education in the serene Ashram campus of Santiniketan.
